Writing under the pen name A.L. Suarez, Ana Lara is a Cuban-born epic fantasy author, psychiatry healthcare professional, and trauma advocate based in Miami. Her gritty, realistic approach to fiction is rooted in a very real past: in 1994, she escaped a dictatorship and survived a near-fatal boat journey from Cuba to the United States.
Those formative experiences with survival and her dedication to mental health advocacy shape the foundation of her work, committing her to exploring the depths of human resilience. Suarez builds diverse, queer-inclusive fantasy worlds where characters face authentic psychological struggles—from PTSD to substance abuse.
Driven by the belief that fiction should mirror the raw complexities of real life, her debut novel, The Gift of Ruin, was written to deliver a single, vital message to her readers: you are not alone!
At home, Ana is grounded by the absolute center of her world—the four pets who truly run the show: her dogs, Tiberius and Rocket, and her cats, Winnie and Severus.
